Overview

**2,3-Bis-benzo[1,3]dioxol-5-ylmethyl-succinic acid** is a synthetic small molecule compound with the molecular formula C20H18O8 and a molecular weight of approximately 386.4 g/mol. It is primarily studied as an experimental inhibitor of metallo-beta-lactamases—specifically IMP-type enzymes found in antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. These enzymes hydrolyze beta-lactam antibiotics (including carbapenems), rendering them ineffective. This compound acts by binding to the active site of IMP-type metallo-beta-lactamases and inhibiting their enzymatic activity. Structural studies have shown it forms stable complexes with these enzymes and can protect broad-spectrum antibiotics from degradation in vitro. The compound has not been approved for clinical use and remains at the experimental research stage[1][2][4][8].
